‘Nowhere’ now here – photography exhibition opens

Media Arts graduates and Arts Waikato 2009 scholarship recipients Trish Macky and Naomi Williams are currently exhibiting their photographic postgraduate work at the Calder and Lawson gallery at the Wel Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts, University of Waikato.

Their exhibition titled nowhere features large-scale photographic prints of everyday suburban settings and these large luscious prints of rich colours are a sensory experience that needs to be seen.

Macky says her work seeks to activate an experience of threshold for the viewer through her photographic representation of the transition between inside and outside spaces.

Williams uses a cinematic styling to explore the non-dramatic suburban environment in her nighttime photographs. “Through photography, the scenes become something more than what they are,” says Williams. “We are safely and comfortably drawn through an almost magical setting, in places where often at night we would hesitate to look.”

Head of Wintec’s School of Media Arts Margi Moore says it’s excellent to see Macky and Williams extending their postgraduate projects through further exhibition and the addition of a high calibre catalogue. “The public now have a great opportunity to see and read about these dynamic works”.

Macky and Williams have gained numerous awards during their studies towards their Bachelor of Media Arts (Honours) degrees and will be graduating with first class Honours in April.

Both artists are currently residing in the Waikato where they intend to continue with their fine art practices. Macky is working as a freelance writer and photographer, while Williams is a freelance photographer and part-time tutor at Wintec.

‘Nowhere’ is open weekdays from 10am – 4pm until March 18th.
